EFECTOS PSICOLÓGICOS DEL ESTRABISMO EN EL ADULTO. ESTUDIO EXPERIMENTAL: PRIMEROS RESULTADOS
RESUMEN
Se ha realizado un estudio experimental sobre los efectos psicológicos del estrabismo en pacientes adultos y su modificación después de la corrección quirúrgica.
Se estudian 12 pacientes adultos con estrabismo infantil no corregido (5 endotropías, 5 exotropías, 2 verticales) que respondieron a un cuestionario especialmente diseñado donde se utilizan tres escalas diferentes: escala HSCL, cuestionario de autoestima y cuestionario de atribución. El mismo cuestionario fue respondido antes y después de la cirugía.
Con los resultados obtenidos podemos afirmar que el estrabismo es más que una simple cuestión estética, ya que causa alteraciones psicosociales y su corrección mejora no sólo la estética, sino también la imagen que la persona tiene de sí misma, las relaciones interpersonales y diversos aspectos psicológicos (ansiedad, obsesión y depresión). En resumen, influye positivamente en la «calidad de vida» de estas personas.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF STRABISMUS ON ADULTS. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY: FIRST RESULTS
SUMMARY
An experimental study about the psychological effects of strabismus on adult patients and its modification after the surgical correction has been carried out.
12 adult patients with non corrected infantile strabismus (5 esotropies, 5 exotropies, 2 vertical) have been studied. They answered to a questionaire, especially designed, that uses three different scales: HSCL scale, self-esteem questionaire and atribution questionaire. The same questionaire was answered before and after the surgery.
According to the obtained results, we can affirm that strabismus is more than just a question of aesthetics, because it causes psychosocial alterations and its correction improves not only the aesthetics, but also the self image of a person, the interpersonal relations and some psychological aspects (anxiety, obsesion and depression). It has a positive influence on the «quality of life» of these persons.
